Vagina Chronicles:Sex on your period

Written by Gemina

I know some of you have tried it!! A lot of women (and men) think the idea is gross and I get it. Who feels like sex when you’re bloated, cramping, and moody? If you have not had sex while on your period, this is in no way me trying to persuade you to do so…however, there are some advantages to it.

  1. Doctors are not advising against it. "Medically speaking, having sex when you’re menstruating is just fine.”1

  2. Your hormone levels are already off the rails and scattered everywhere. A little nookie and release can shift some of those hormones and make you less moody as well as relieve menstrual cramps.

  3. Instead of worrying about all the extra fluid involved, consider the blood as a plus, extra natural lubricant. Having added wetness is never a bad thing during sex- slip and slide!

  4. The likelihood that a woman will get pregnant one to two days after she starts bleeding is nearly zero.2

Period sex is not for everyone. Definitely talk to your partner ahead of time to find out how they feel in order respect your partner’s feelings and beliefs.

Gemina’s recommendations:

  1. Still use protection.

  2. Do it on your lighter period days.

  3. To avoid a mess, prepare the surface where you will be doing your business. Use a thick, dark-colored cloth (towel or a bed sheet folded a few times). Or do it in the shower.

  4. Try a menstrual cup or disk. Certain menstrual cups and disks sit in such a way in your body that they catch blood but also allow you to have sex wearing them.1
