National HIV Testing Day

It’s that time of year again… National HIV testing day!!!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1.2 million people in the United States have HIV1.

Last year, you all saw me get my rapid HIV testing- it was quick, painless, and results took less than 5 minutes. You can get a rapid test (finger prick or oral test) or have blood drawn. The rapid oral HIV test detects antibodies made by the immune system in response to HIV infection, just like the standard blood antibody test2. The rapid oral test, however, detects these antibodies in oral fluid, and doesn't require a blood sample2.

Yes, it is nerve racking to not know your status but; testing will help put your mind at ease and help you take control of your health. For people with undiagnosed HIV, testing is the first step in maintaining a healthy life and reducing the spread of HIV.1
